Before the day
Because the day is about the tools, arrive with them installed and opened once, so that the part of the day on the toolchain can be spent on what the tools are for.
| Work through | What you do | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Install R and an IDE (Positron, RStudio, VS Code, etc.), download the workspace zip and run R/check_setup.R until it prints OK. Open the browser lab once as well. The help page has the problems that other participants have met, and prompts that you can give an AI assistant. |
30 to 60 minutes, once |
| Positron, RStudio and VS Code | Read section 1, then the section on the IDE you chose, and do the six steps of section 6 in the workspace: open the folder, run the check, open the data in the viewer, filter it, draw a plot, render the report. | 45 minutes |
| Exercise overview | Read the claim you will be working on and the table of what the five Multi100 analysts found when they reanalysed it. Note the column that records the software that each analyst used. | 10 minutes |
| Getting started with R, sections 1 to 3 | Optional. R and the IDE, the console against the script, objects and data frames. The first R session of the day starts where these sections end. | 45 minutes |
By the start of the day the workspace opens in your IDE, the check script prints OK, the data frame has opened once in the viewer, and the report has rendered once.
